DUBUQUE COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The Dubuque County Courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was one of the first buildings in the Dubuque area so honored. The building is 88 feet by 125 feet in size. A 190 foot high central tower is capped with a bronze statue of Lady Justice that is 14 feet tall. Other pewter statues are also on the building. Several other statues were taken down during World War I and melted down to provide material for the war effort.

JULIEN DUBUQUE MONUMENT IN THE MINES OF SPAIN

MINES OF SPAIN RECREATION AREA & E.B. LYONS INTERPRETIVE CENTER

The Mesquakie were the earliest known inhabitants of the Mines of Spain Area. Their village was located at the mouth of the Catfish Creek. The Mesquakie carried on a fur trade with French voyagers. They also worked the lead mines for many decades before the Revolutionary War. Mounds, village sites, rock shelters, trading post sites and campsites dot the landscape. Julien Dubuque is believed to be the first European to settle on what is now Iowa soil in 1788. In 1796, Dubuque received a land grant from the Governor of Spain to work the land. The grant specified that the 189-square mile area to be named as the "Mines of Spain." The park is designated as the Julien Dubuque Mines National Historic Landmark as a Silos and Smokestacks Heritage Area Partner Site, State Preserve, National Recreational Trails, Important Birding Area, and Watchable Iowa Wildlife Area. Groomed for both in-line and skate skiing. Five miles of trails full of wildlife and beautiful scenery. Call ahead for conditions. Canoe or kayak Catfish Creek which runs through the park. Launch at the Catfish Creek canoe access and paddle toward the main channel of the Mississippi River or paddle through the park and enjoy the back waters of the Mississippi.

SHOT TOWER

The George W. Rogers Company Shot Tower was built in 1856 and produced lead shot until 1861. In 1881 it became a fire look-out for the Standard Lumber Company. It remained a fire watch tower until 1911 when it caught fire and was completely gutted. Since that devastating fire, it has been a historical landmark that has highlighted Dubuque's skyline. The Shot Tower is currently undergoing a $600,000 rehabilitation project that includes: an archeological survey in and around the tower, repointing, masonry repairs, a new roof, new windows and new window sills.

STAR BREWERY COMPLEX

600 Star Brewery Drive | Dubuque, IA 52001

The Dubuque Star Brewery is a visually dominant five-story brick brew house. Typical of other mid-sized breweries of its day, it is designed in the Romanesque style. It was one of a handful of Iowa breweries to revive after the end of national prohibition in 1933. The film "F.I.S.T." was partly filmed at the brewery.
